Nominate a Caregiver for a Prestigious Award and a Chance to Win $10,000

The search is on for exceptional caregivers across Canada. In celebration of National Caregiver Day, which will occur on April 7, Canadians are being asked to nominate a family or professional caregiver for a unique caregiver award and explain what the caregiver would do with $10,000.

It's part of a unique program, called Canada Cares (www.canadacares.org), that supports and celebrates caregivers. The awards, which will be presented both regionally and nationally, will recognize 10 exceptional caregivers - five family members and five professionals - in four regions: Western, Central, Atlantic and Northern Canada.

"If you know a caregiver who deserves recognition, we want to hear from you," said Caroline Tapp-McDougall, Chair of Canada Cares. "The number of caregivers is growing at a rapid pace across the country, with one in four Canadian adults providing care at home for a loved one, and it's time to support and recognize people for their tireless, selfess efforts to help others in need."

One deserving nominee will also be selected to win the $10,000 Canada Cares One Wish Award, sponsored by We Care Home Health Services.

Again this year, Canada Cares will recognize communities and employers that are leaders in the ways that they celebrate and support caregivers. The Caregiver-Friendly Workplace Award, in partnership with the Canadian Abilities Foundation, and the Caring Communities Award will be presented to one community and one business or organization nationally, based on public nominations.

The 3rd annual awards ceremony will take place in November at the Canadian Home Care Association's summit in Ottawa, where winners are invited to attend.

Caregiver Award winners are selected by a national committee according to such criteria as caregiver strength, commitment to care, community involvement and compassion. The Canada Cares One Wish Award will be evaluated on the creativity of the request and the level of need, and the Caregiver-Friendly Workplace and Caring Communities Awards on celebration, innovation, accommodation and excellence.

Nominations - which can be submitted online, by mail or by video - will be accepted until September 18, with winners announced in November. For details on how to nominate a caregiver, visit www.canadacares.org.
