Frost & Sullivan Acclaims Mycronic for Developing High-Speed Jet Printing Technology as an Alternative to Solder Paste Printing and Dispensing

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the surface mount technology (SMT) printers market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Mycronic with the 2014 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product Innovation. Mycronic has the distinction of being the sole company to develop jet printing technology for SMT printing, giving it a unique market position and high brand equity in the global market. Its MY600 Jet Printer, which offers a throughput of more than 1 million dots per hour, is 50 percent faster than its predecessor MY500. As a software-driven solution, the MY600 Jet Printer is gradually closing the demand gap with traditional screen printers.

The main technology challenge faced by traditional screen printers is the miniaturization of electronics, higher board density and mixing of small and large components. As consumer electronics and automotive analog components are becoming highly digitized, electronic components and board sizes are shrinking to enhance usability. This proportionally increases the complexity of the board design, which, in turn, makes the stencil design more challenging and expensive. Mycronic's highly accurate, software-driven, noncontact, and stencil-free Jet Printer is a viable alternative to solder paste printing or traditional dispensing.

The jet printing technology is similar to inkjet printing. The data for a particular printed circuit board (PCB) is compiled offline and then sent to the Jet Printer. The printer then employs a unique ejection method to emit tiny, controlled droplets of solder paste from a cartridge onto the PCB at the positions required by the board layout. Being software-driven, Jet Printers eliminate all stencil-related expenses, such as stencil design, manufacturing, maintenance, and replacement.

"The MY600 printer features a sophisticated, multi-axis servo system with advanced motion control to move the print head across the board," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Viswam Sathiyanarayanan. "Mycronic has also developed a data preparation tool to design jet printing programs. The program is debugged, fine-tuned offline, and verified with zero errors before printing."

Since jet printing is a highly repeatable process, the quality of printing is largely unaffected by external disruptions, guaranteeing high yields. Its software-driven mechanism enables manufacturers to integrate their shop floor into a fully automated production line with zero human interference. In addition, manufacturers experience no product changeover time because the MY600 is stencil-free, and the product changeover is done simply by changing the printing program. Overall, end users prefer jet printing to screen rinting for complex printing applications as the former predefines solder paste volume, height, position, shape, and pad coverage to deliver a much superior end product.

Furthermore, the company provides exclusive customer service dedicated to maintaining and improving productivity. Additionally, it arranges training for operators, programmers, and technical professionals, as well as offers process service to help the manufacturing line run at peak efficiency.

"The MY600 is a complete solution for handling challenging printing applications such as flexible boards, broad cavities, multi-level printing, and quad-flat no-leads, with micrometer accuracy," noted Sathiyanarayanan. "Evidently, Mycronic meets its customers' requirements for complex printing with uncompromised yield and quality in all aspects."

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has developed an innovative element in a product by leveraging leading-edge technologies. The award recognizes the value-added features/benefits of the product and the increased ROI it offers customers, which, in turn, increases customer acquisition and overall market penetration potential.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
