NextVR Incorporates Light Field Technology Into Virtual Reality ExperienceLAGUNA BEACH, Calif., March 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- NextVR, a pioneer in immersive 3D broadcast quality VR experiences, today announced they will incorporate light field capture technology into their virtual reality platform. Delivering a massive leap forward for the virtual experience, viewers will be able to adjust their view by peering around objects within a live VR scene. This breakthrough provides the viewer with a heightened sense of immersion never before possible in live-action VR. For example, when attending a live-action basketball game in virtual reality, the viewer will be able to look around a referee who may be standing in the way, or those at a rock concert in VR can look behind the lead singer to see the drummer. NextVR, having invested three years of research and development into incorporation of light field technology, has several patents filed around the use of light field capture and stereoscopic view-synthesis. The patents support the use of light fields and positional tracking for capture and display of immersive environments. Content captured with NextVR's patent protected technology will be viewable natively in volumetric display devices (e.g. Microsoft's HoloLens or Magic Leap's rumored digital light field displa), and NextVR is the only company with the ability to deliver real time, live-action content to the full gamut of VR and AR displays coming to market. "This innovation is a required next step toward creating the 'holodeck'," said Dave Cole, co-founder, NextVR. "By incorporating dynamically-generated 3D geometry with ultra-high resolution stereoscopic video, we've created most the vivid and life-like VR experience currently possible."
