Taqua Showcases Pre-IMS and IMS Based VoWiFi at Mobile World Congress

Taqua®, LLC, a leading supplier of mobile and fixed communications solutions, will demonstrate its standards-based VoWiFi solution supporting both Apple iPhones and Android (News - Alert)-based handsets at booth 1H27 in Hall One at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The demonstrations will utilize Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core (VMC ) in both pre-IMS and IMS configurations, as well as Taqua's downloadable VoWiFi client for Android handsets.

Significant recent mobile industry attention has been focused on VoWiFi as a straight forward, cost effective solution for the industry's long standing indoor coverage challenge. Research has shown that 24 percent of consumers are not satisfied with their ability to make and receive calls at home. Depending upon country location, 40 percent to 60 percent of mobile subscribers have similar indoor coverage issues at work. Weak indoor coverage is a key cause of subscriber churn and lost revenue for mobile network operators. Today, 34 percent of consumers cite coverage as a reason for switching providers.

Taqua solves the indoor coverage challenge with a VoWiFi solution that can be deployed with or without an IMS network; and the same VoWiFi network configuration can be utilized for VoLTE deployments. "Mobile subscribers should be able to access the best available radio for their communications or data networking needs," said John Hoadley, vice president of products for Taqua. "More often than not, the best access radio indoors is WiFi, and users already overwhelmingly turning to WiFi for their data offload needs."

Taqua's VoWiFi core networking solution and mobile client enable operators to offer theirsubscribers seamless and transparent WiFi access just as they do today for data. And the same core network solution can be utilized when the operator's network requires IMS and they are prepared to rollout VoLTE as a service.

Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core

Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core (VMC) is a converged 4G mobile core enabling rapid deployment of next -generation mobile voice and messaging services including VoWiFi, VoLTE and Small Cells. The VMC is a carrier-grade software product that converges a number of 3GPP standard functions including a Telephony Application Server (TAS), IP Short Message Gateway (News - Alert) (IP-SM-GW), Service Consistency and Continuity Application Server (SCC-AS), and Media Resource Function (MRF). It works with standards-based VoWiFi clients, such as the native Wi-Fi Calling capability in Apple's (News - Alert) iOS 8 as well as Taqua's Mobile Client for Android devices.

Taqua's Mobile Client

Taqua's Mobile Client is a standards-compliant VoWiFi client for smartphones that's available in embedded and downloadable versions. The Client has been used in all major mobile operator VoWiFi deployments, and is integrated into over one hundred handset models by some of the world's largest vendors, including Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola (News - Alert), Huawei, and ZTE. Whether downloadable or embedded, subscribers receive a true native VoWiFi user experience. Once installed, the client operates as a background task on the phone and subscribers can continue to make calls using the native dialer, contacts app, call log or any third party application that initiates standard mobile calls. In addition, the client supports the delivery of all mobile services over Wi-Fi, including voice calls, SMS/MMS and a full set of supplementary services. As a downloadable client that is distributed as a standard application through the Google (News - Alert) Play Store, the Taqua Mobile Client can add VoWiFi capability to an operators installed base of Android phones, whether those phones were purchased directly from the operator or through alternative channels, including BYOD. The Taqua Mobile Client can also be preloaded onto the smartphone during the standard distribution process, enabling a true "out of the box" experience.
