Resolute Health Achieves National Electronic Medical Record Recognition From HIMSS Analytics

Resolute Health Hospital, a Tenet Healthcare hospital, announced that it has achieved HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 status for Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption Model (EMRAM).

Stage 6 institutions establish clear goals for improving safety, minimizing errors, and prioritizing IT implementations. HIMSS analytics evaluates the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals. EMRAM includes eight stages (0-7). Stage 6 hospitals are at the forefront of electronic health records (EHR) adoption. This recognition is an important indicator that the hospital delivers high-quality patient care.

"The top five key benefits recognized by HIMSS Stage 6 hospitals are reducing medication errors; reducing misdiagnosis; providing the care with accurate and timely information; improving efficiency and patient throughput; and providing access all at one place," said Resolute Health Chief Medical Information Officer Ahmad Sharif, MD. "At Resolute Health we want to make sure we're engaging everyone along the process of implementing technology to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients and staff."

Stage 6 hospitals have achieved a significant advancement in their IT capabilities that positions them to successfully address many of the current industry transformations, such as meaningful use criteria in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, claims attachments for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, pay for performance, and government quality reporting programs.

To earn HIMSS Stage 6 recognition, hospitals must:

  • Have made significant executive commitments and investments to reach this stage.
  • Appear to have a significant advantage over competitors for patient safety, clinician support, clinician recruitment, and competitive marketing for both consumers and nurse recruitment.
  • Have almost fully automated/paperless medical records when they have implemented their IT applications across most of the inpatient care settings
  • Are either starting to evaluate their data for care delivery process improvements or have already documented significant improvements in this area.
  • Have made investments that are within reach of most hospitals and recognize the strategic value of improving patient care with the EMR.
  • Have begun to create strategic alignments with their medical staff to effectively utilize information technology to improve the patient safety environment.
  • Are well positioned to provide data to key stakeholders, such as payers, the government, physicians, consumers, and employers, to support electronic health record environments and health information exchanges.

"Our clinical staff is also to be congratulated for their efforts to adopt our EMR system despite a steep learning curve and while opening a new hospital," said Tess Coody-Anders, Resolute Health CEO. "HIMSS Stage 6 represents recognition for our physician partners for their input of documentation, which puts point of care as close to the patient as possible. Since it is structured data, they're also able to receive alerts and protocols at the point of care, which again has an impact on patient care. Physician adoption of our EMR makes a positive impact every day on the care we deliver."

In 2012, HIMSS Analytics conducted a survey that included a large number of Stage 6 and 7 hospitals. The most commonly reported clinical and operational benefits were:

  • Adverse Drug Events (ADE (News - Alert)) reduction (73%)
  • Improvements in other patient safety indicators (58%)
  • Improvements in Venous Thrombo Embolism (55%)
  • Improvements in managing Congestive Heart Failure (48%)
  • Reduction in order turnaround times (76%)
  • Improved drug order to administration times (73%)
  • Reduction in the cost of paper forms (67%)
  • Improved charge capture (64%)
  • Decreased transcription costs (61%)

"HIMSS Analytics congratulates Resolute Health for leading the way toward health IT adoption," said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. "Stage 6 represents a level of sophistication that only 19 percent of US hospitals have reached to date."
