Henry Rollins Narrates Greil Marcus's The History of Rock 'N' Roll in Ten Songs, Now Available as an Audio Download at Audible.com

Audible, Inc., the world's largest seller and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken-word content, today announced the release of The History of Rock 'N' Roll in Ten Songs, leading music critic Greil Marcus's daring take on rock history, narrated by rock icon Henry Rollins. In the audiobook, Marcus chooses 10 songs recorded between 1956 and 2008-by artists as diverse as Joy Division and Etta James-and explores how each shaped and influenced this defining musical genre.

"No music book I've ever read has made me think about music in the way that The History of Rock 'N' Roll in Ten Songs does," said Rollins. "Greil Marcus takes a song and goes forth from it, and brings in so much other music and history, you find yourself putting the book down for a moment and going off on your own voyages thinking about these songs, what they mean to you, and connecting these dots in your own completely unique way."

"I think one of the best ways of experiencing this writing, at least in this book, is to hear it," added Rollins.

"Henry Rollins reading Greil Marcus-what more could any fan of contemporary music ask for?" said Audible EVP and Publisher Beth Anderson. "Henry Rollins is a passionate and engaging authority on music, as readers of his weekly column and listeners to his radio show already know. Adding his voice to this important work of rock criticism makes this listening experience all the richer."

Rollins, who rose to fame as the lead singer of punk band Black Flag and then the Rollins Band, is a regular columnist for LA Weekly and hosts a weekly show on Los Angeles NPR (News - Alert) affiliate KCRW.

Among the acclaimed performers who have narrated works of literature for Audible are Dan Stevens, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet and Tim Robbins. In 2013, Audible Studios won its first Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian's memoir Society's Child, and also won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, for Colin Firth's performance of Graham Greene's The End of the Affair.

Audible invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2014, listeners around the world downloaded 1.2 billion hours of audio from Audible.com outlets; Audible members downloaded an average of more than 17 books over the course of the year. More than half of current Audible members are first-time audiobook buyers.
