Hagens Berman filed its initial 130-page class-action suit on Nov. 7, 2014 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, and has since filed two additional cases, all of which accuse Takata of manufacturing defective airbags that can "blow up like hand-grenades, sending lethal metal and plastic shrapnel into the vehicle cockpit and into the bodies of the drivers and passengers." The suit claims that Takata withheld knowledge of the airbag defects from federal regulators and ordered its technicians to destroy data evidencing airbag inflator housing defects, including video and computer backups.

Hagens Berman's managing partner Steve Berman has led several nationwide class-action automotive defect cases. He and his firm secured a $1.6 billion settlement in litigation against Toyota Motor Corp for owners of vehicles that were potentially prone to unintended acceleration. Berman was also recently named co-lead counsel in the high-profile class-action lawsuit against General Motors, covering claims over faulty ignition switches and loss of vehicle value.
