CEA Publishes Two Standards Projects Featured at the 2015 International CES

Today at the 2015 International CES (News - Alert)®, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® announced the publication of two of its standards projects, addressing consumer electronics (CE) industry initiatives to make motor vehicle drivers safer and implement IPv6 in CE products.

"CEA formed these groups to address critical issues that are impacting consumers and the CE industry," said Brian Markwalter, senior vice president of research and standards at CEA. "Our industry has developed products that reduce the amount of time a driver must look away from the road, an alternative to regulating every possible distraction in the car. And the IPv6 working group was instrumental in bringing the industry together to ensure a seamless transition for businesses and consumers alike, as the supply of IPv4 addresses becomes exhausted."

Companies that offer products or services that help drivers operate safely were invited to submit descriptions of their technology for inclusion in CEA's technical report, CEA-TR-6, Keeping Your Eyes on the Road: What the CE Industry is Doing to Help You Drive Safely. The report provides an overview of existing consumer products and technologies that promote safe driving by keeping drivers' eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

CEA formed the IPv6 Working Group in 2011 to coordinate activities among CE manufacturers, service providers and retailers as the Internet transitions from IPv4 addressing to IPv6, ensuring Internet-enabled devices to continue operation without interruption. CEA-2048, Host and Router Profiles for IPv6 defines the technical requirements for IPv6-enabled connected devices and home routers. This standard defines necessary feature sets for several levels of IPv6 support, creating profiles for Basic, Basic-plus and Advanced IPv6-capable devices. The simplest networking devices such as network printers, alarms and home automation systems are Basic devices that will support a limited set of IPv6 features. More Internet capability is appropriate for the Basic-plus profile group: optical disc players, game consoles, smart TVs and media servers. Advnced devices are those that need the most Internet capability such as PCs, tablets and smartphones. The IPv6 Working Group is co-chaired by Hans Liu, director of software architecture at D-Link (News - Alert) Systems Inc., and Dan Torbet, director of system engineering at ARRIS.

The "Featured Standards" program at CES aims to draw worldwide attention to important, new industry standards at the event. Owned and produced by CEA, CES is the world's gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. The safer driving technical report and the IPv6 standard were chosen during last year's CES to be featured at the 2015 CES. Specifications that are selected for the 2015 Featured Standards program are expected to be completed by the 2016 CES.

The technical report and the IPv6 standard are available at no cost until Feb. 28, 2015.
