Girard Gibbs LLP Represents Current and Former Sony Pictures Employees Affected by Data Breach

The law firm of Girard Gibbs LLP has filed a class action complaint in the United States District Court for the Central District of California on behalf of all current and former Sony Pictures Entertainment employees whose personal information was compromised as a result of the Sony Pictures data breach first publicized in November 2014. The complaint alleges that Sony Pictures Entertainment failed to adequately safeguard its employees' personal, financial and medical information that resulted in the data breach and subsequent publication on the internet.

According to the complaint, in late November 2014, thousands of Sony Pictures' current and former employees learned that they were victims of a massive data breach in which their personnel records were compromised. Among ther things, the data breach resulted in employees' names, home and email addresses, Social Security numbers, visa and passport numbers, salary and retirement plan data, and health insurance and medical information being made public.

"Most employees have to provide companies with highly confidential information ranging from Social Security and direct deposit account numbers, to health insurance and medical information for them and their family," said Matthew B. George, a partner at Girard Gibbs LLP. "California law is unequivocal that the information must be appropriately safeguarded."

The lawsuit alleges that since the breach, Sony has been focusing its remediation efforts on retaining intellectual property lost in the breach and damage control associated with embarrassing emails released to the media. "By filing this action, we intend to compel Sony Pictures to place its primary post-breach emphasis on its efforts to upgrade its security measures to protect its employees' and their families' data and employ all measures possible to have those records removed from the public domain and restricted from further unauthorized access," Mr. George added.
