Magellan Health Advisory Council to Provide Expertise Regarding State-of-the-Art Healthcare Advancements


Magellan Health, Inc. (NASDAQ: MGLN) today announced the formation of the Magellan (News - Alert) Health Advisory Council to provide expertise to Magellan senior leaders regarding state-of-the-art developments concerning healthcare treatment, trends and care.

Maintaining and advancing a state-of-the-art knowledge of these changes is crucial to providing quality and effective healthcare services to those we serve," said Sam K. Srivastava, chief executive officer of Magellan Healthcare, Magellan Health's behavioral health and integrated care business. "We believe that cultivating the knowledge, values, and visions of leading, outside experts is essential to our evolution."

Among other areas, the Magellan Health Advisory Council will provide input related to:

  • Advances in healthcare services and techniques
  • Development of clinical models and health delivery systems
  • Trends in the behavioral health industry related to the conduct of managed care companies, providers, and health plan sponsors
  • Public policy and legislative changes affecting the healthcare industry

The Magellan Health Advisory Council will be chaired by retired Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Elder Granger. Granger is the president and founder of The 5Ps, LLC, which provides healthcare, leadership, and education consulting. Prior to founding The 5Ps, Granger retired from the United States military, after serving for 37 years. At retirement, Granger was the deputy director and program executive officer of TRICARE Management Activity, in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. In this role, he served as the principal advisor to the assistant secretary on Department of Defense (DoD) health plan policy and performance. Granger began his career with the Army medical department in 1971 as a combat medic in the U.S. Army National Guard.

"From experience with active-duty and veterans healthcare issues to state and federally-funded healthcare programs, cutting-edge behavioral health research, health concerns impacting family members and caregivers and leveraging technology to deliver healthcare more effectively and fficiently, I am confident these individuals will help ensure that Magellan Health continues to be on the forefront of healthcare management on behalf of special populations."



Other members of the Magellan Health Advisory Council include:

Michael A. Boylan: Michael A. Boylan is currently the founder and chief executive officer of The Reach For Me Network, the first social network focused on serving the estimated 35 million parents, families and related caregivers for children with cognitive and/or physical special needs.


Charles G. Curie: Charles G. Curie is the principal and founder of The Curie Group, LLC, a management and consulting firm specializing in working with leaders of the healthcare field. He was nominated by President George W. Bush to lead the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) from 2001 to 2006, and from 1995 to 2001, Curie was appointed by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge as deputy secretary for mental health and substance abuse services.

Retired Capt. (Dr.) Warren A. Jones: Capt. (Dr.) Warren A. Jones is a retired captain in the U.S. Navy. Currently, Jones is the National Institutes of Health Endowed Chair of Health Disparities Research and professor of chemistry at Dillard University in New Orleans, La. Previously, Jones served as the executive director of the Division of Medicaid in the Office of the Governor of Mississippi. Jones retired from the U.S. Navy and his position as the medical director of the TRICARE military health program in 2001.

Dr. Jason Karlawish: Dr. Jason Karlawish is a professor of medicine, medical ethics and health policy, a senior fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, and a fellow at the Institute on Aging at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the director of the University of Pennsylvania's Neurodegenerative Disease Ethics and Policy Program; associate director of the University of Pennsylvania Memory Center; and the director of the Alzheimer's Disease Center's education, recruitment and retention core.

Dr. Robert Kolodner: Dr. Robert Kolodner is the co-founder and president of Collaborative Transformations, LLC, which consults with government and non-profit organizations regarding their health IT strategies and plans. Previously, Kolodner served for 31 years in both the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services (HHS).

Mary Sherman Mittelman, D.P.H.: Mary Sherman Mittelman, D.P.H., is currently a research professor within the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone School of Medicine. Sherman Mittelman is the director of the psychosocial core of the NYU-Alzheimer's Disease Center. For more than 20 years, Sherman Mittelman was principal investigator of the NYU-Spouse Caregiver Intervention (NYUCI) study, first funded by the NIH in 1987.

Retired Col. Jimmy A. Norris: Retired Col. Jimmy A. Norris serves in Grant Thornton's (News - Alert) Global Public Sector business, providing consulting services to the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense Military Health System. Prior to his retirement from federal service in 2010, Norris served as the chief financial officer of the Veterans Benefits Administration, beginning in 2006.

Graham Perry: Graham Perry is an independent consultant with more than 25 years of experience providing information technology solutions, primarily with IBM and the SAS (News - Alert) Institute, spanning strategy, business development, alliances and sales. In his role as IBM program director for alliances, he led teams to build productive relationships delivering innovative IT solutions, comprising infrastructure and professional services.

Retired Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Daniel O. Wyman: Retired Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Daniel O. Wyman was most recently the command surgeon, Air Combat Command (ACC), with headquarters at Langley Air Force Base. He organized, trained, equipped and maintained combat-ready medical forces for rapid deployment and employment. He was responsible for the health of 79,000 active-duty and civilian personnel located at 13 bases and more than 300 operating locations worldwide.
