William D. Goddard Joins Day Pitney as Partner in Hartford
Day Pitney announced today that Bill Goddard has joined the firm as a
partner in the Insurance and Reinsurance practice group. Bill joins Day
Pitney's Hartford office following Morgan Lewis' acquisition of Bingham
McCutchen, a deal that resulted in immediate conflicts for Bill and the
clients he was serving. Bill's breadth of experience in insurance,
reinsurance and insurance insolvency matters will have immediate
benefits to Day Pitney's existing insurance and reinsurance clients. His
arrival augments Day Pitney's existing Insurance and Reinsurance
practice group, which is Day Pitney's fastest growing litigation
practice.
"The decision to pursue other opportunities in the market was dictated
by the conflicts arising from Bingham's acquisition," said Goddard. "I
enjoy practicing and serving clients in the Northeast marketplace who
can best utilize my experience. When I surveyed the possible firms to
move to, Day Pitney was the clear winner for me. We share many common
clients and, at the same time, Day Pitney offers a wonderful platform to
continue my insurance insolvency practice. I am excited to be joining
Day Pitney's insurance practice team and look forward to working with
its existing group of well-established lawyers and contributing to the
firm's ongoing success."
Bill has devoted his legal career to counseling insurance companies,
regulators and creditors; helping them to solve complex problems related
to financial distress, coverage and regulatory compliance. He has
extensive experience in insurance mergers and acquisitions. He was
recently named a "Rising Star, Restructuring and Insolvency" by
IFLR1000. For the last seven years, Bill has taught insurance litigation
at the University of Connecicut School of Law, where he received his JD
degree while studying insurance law at the University's Insurance Law
Center. He has also lectured on insurance-linked securities, insurance
company insolvency and Native American gaming financial distress. He is
best known for his work with clients in the FGIC, Ambac and ACA
Financial Guaranty insolvencies and in a very large Native American
gaming restructuring. He has written extensively on insurance insolvency
issues.
"Bill is both an accretive and strategic hire for our firm. His years of
industry experience will add a valuable perspective to our existing
clients and introduce us to new ones," said Mike Mullins, who in March
2012 joined Day Pitney's Boston office as a lateral partner in the
Insurance and Reinsurance practice group. "My integration with Day
Pitney has gone extremely well and has added to the strength and breadth
of Day Pitney's long-established Hartford based team. We are continuing
to broaden our reach, not only across the United States but also
internationally. Bill's addition serves as a natural follow-on
acquisition for us and Bill will make an immediate impact on the firm
with his national experience, as well as his experience in the areas of
life and health insurance. He will be integral in achieving our long
term goals of expanding our insurance insolvency, property casualty and
regulatory capabilities."
"We are very pleased to welcome Bill to Day Pitney, he is a brilliant
lawyer who is highly thought of within our firm and among the insurance
bar," said Daniel FitzMaurice, an insurance partner based in Hartford
and a member of Day Pitney's Executive Committee. "Bill has a breadth of
industry experience and a pristine reputation. His insolvency practice
will be a great addition to the firm and his regulatory practice
promises to complement and create great synergies with our insurance
practice capabilities. It is an exciting time for the practice and for
the firm, as Bill will be joining us at the same time as the Trusts &
Estates group from Bingham joins our Boston office."
Prior to attending law school, Bill was an investment banker at J.P.
Morgan & Co. and at Marsh & McLennan Securities Corporation, focusing on
mergers and acquisitions within the insurance industry. He also provided
financial advice to companies experiencing financial distress. Bill
earned his B.A. in 1981 and his M.B.A. in 1983 from Dartmouth College,
and his J.D. from University of Connecticut School of Law in 2004. He is
admitted to practice in Connecticut and New York. He served as law clerk
to the Hon. Jon O. Newman, United States Court of Appeals for the Second
Circuit. Bill and his family reside in Glastonbury, CT.
