CEA Statement on Senate's Down Vote on USA FREEDOM Act

ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)--

The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro (News - Alert), president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding the Senate's failure to advance the USA FREEDOM Act:

"We are disappointed with the Senate's failure to advance the USA FREEDOM Act. The National Security Agency's (News - Alert) data collection activities have damaged the reputation of U.S. tech companies, costing the U.S. economy tens of millions of dollars, countless jobs and placing American companies at a competitive disadvantage.

"Next year, Congress needs to reform our government's surveillance activities so that our government can combat terrorism but also protect legitimate expectations of privacy. Legislation that brings narrowly-tailored rules and greater transparency to government intelligence activities and the scope of law enforcement's reach will assure American and foreign consumers their information is safe with U.S. companies.

"We look forward to working with Congress to ensure the damage done to the tech industry can be repaird."
