Cell tower approved [Middlesboro Daily News, Ky.]

(Middlesboro Daily News (KY) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 10--The Bell County Fiscal Court approved a lease agreement with Appalachian Wireless for the use of a Bell County 911 tower site. The approval came during a meeting on Monday.

Appalachian Wireless is going to construct a tower using a piece of property owned by the county. The project will be a $400,000 to $500,000 project. The company plans on having the project finished within a year.

Judge-Executive Albey Brock said the county has been in the process of trying to improve first-responder communications for the last couple of years. He said they were able use a piece of property they purchased in Middlesboro for the tower.

Brock said the county will be able to hang their equipment on the tower and be able to sub-lease it to other entities to generate revenue without having to spend any money.

"It's a great thing, " said Brock. "It keeps us from having to spend half a million dollars on a communication tower." Brock said the move will also enhance service for Verizon Wireless customers because Appalachian Wireless is a sub-carrier for the company.

According to their website, Appalachian Wireless is eastern Kentucky's leading provider of high quality telecommunications products and services since 1991.

Headquartered in Ivel, Appalachian Wireless operates advanced cellular telephone and paging networks and is dedicated to providing today's most innovative communications products and services at affordable prices to local communities across Kentucky and Western Virginia, according to the website.
