Australia : OPTUS expands 4G coverage across DARWIN [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Optus is ramping up its high-speed credentials an expansion of its 4G services across Darwin in a move that will increase speeds for Northern Territory users with compatible devices.

The 4G expansion would get early access to 700Mhz spectrum, with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) giving the operator the green light to pilot 700Mhz in Darwin and Perth CBDs.

Vic McClelland, Managing Director of Networks at Optus, said "more of our customers across Darwin can enjoy a faster and more reliable mobile internet experience and can download, upload and stream music, pictures and videos at superfast speeds." The roll-out of Optus 4G will mean a better 3G experience by improving network capacity as customers transition to the new 4G data network.

Its 4G expansion covers suburbs including Fannie Bay, Ludmilla, Coconut Grove, Nightcliff, Millner, Winnellie, Moil, Knuckey Lagoon, as well as Charles Darwin University and Darwin International Airport.

Optus' 4G rollout is expected to cover 90% of the Australian population by April 2015. The company lost a Victorian Supreme Court case this year when it claimed the difference between its and Telstra's coverage across Australia was less than 1%.

Optus launched its initial commercial 4G pilot in Darwin, with compatible 4G 700MHz devices such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z3 and HTC One (M8) will be able to access its 4G services.

The news coincides with the announcement of Microsoft's first 700Mhz compatible Windows Phone, the Lumia 830, which will be available with Optus (and Telstra).
