Tate celebrates talents of photography pioneers [Western Morning News (England)]

(Western Morning News (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Images by 30 pioneering photographers is the largest exhibition of its kind that Tate St Ives has ever shown.

For the purist, there was a time when photographs and paintings did not mix - but fortunately, as this exhibition reminds us, in the early 20th century there were a number of enlightened creative people who explored the advantages of working across different media.

Some of the most important artists from the 1920s to the 1960s studied and worked together, developing the experimental approaches we now call "moder nist".

The Modern Lens offers everything from British modernism and "performed walks" made in Paris by Fernand Leger to surrealism and the influence of the Bauhaus, plus rare works by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Walter Peterhans.

However, as informative and intriguing as all these works are, it is likely that the exhibition in the Studio Resource Room will prove the most popular, exploring as it does different aspects of photography in St Ives and in particular the work of Cornel Lucas. A man who began work in the film industry when only 15 years old, he became the first studio photographer to receive in 1998 a BAFTA award for his outstanding contribution to British cinema. For many years he was a regular visitor to St Ives and the exhibition not only contains photographs of him at work in his Piazza studio overlooking Porthmeor Beach and on location, but also his original camera and contact prints. With portraits of such artists as Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach, Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost and John Wells, this exhibition is like a reunion with old friends. The Modern Lens continues at Tate St Ives until May 2015.
