Verizon Cell Phone Service Now Available In Canton [Daily Review, The (PA)]

(Daily Review, The (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CANTON - Finally.

After years of waiting for a cell phone tower to be built, people in Canton are now able to use their Verizon cell phones.

The tower was recently activated.

"It looks like the site went on the air last Wednesday," confirmed John O'Malley Public Relations Manager - Upstate New York Region for Verizon Wireless, when asked for comment.

The construction of the tower, which Verizon called a wireless telecommunications facility, in Canton Township was aimed at improving Verizon Wireless service in and around the Canton area. The Bradford County Planning Commission gave preliminary approval to the project back in 2010. Construction began in October 2013, according to a representative of Advanced Network Services, who was at the site back in September. The company did the construction work for the project.

"It's great, it's very convenient," said Claire Waldmeyer, who teaches at Canton Elementary School. She recalled hearing someone on the playground discover that the Verizon service was available.

She recalled the person saying, "we're getting bars (on our phones)." "It's fun and exciting," she said, adding that having the service was convenient.

"It's great to have it here," said Jared Spann, who was doing some banking Wednesday in downtown Canton.

Jodi Bardo, who was also doing some banking, said she wasn't a Verizon customer, but she was glad the Verizon service was now available.

"I think it's wonderful," she said. "I wish it would have been here a while ago." Carol Bastion of Alba, who works in Canton, was also happy that Verizon service was available.
