WeatherBug and Southern New England's WLNE-TV Partner on Live, Local Weather

GERMANTOWN, Md. & PROVIDENCE, R.I. --(Business Wire)--

Residents of southern New England tuning into their favorite local news station are getting up-to-the-minute real-time weather from sensors in and around Providence, thanks to a new partnership with WLNE-TV ABC6 and WeatherBug.

WLNE is the only broadcaster in southern New England that can tap into the WeatherBug (News - Alert) Weather Network. This vast network includes thousands of weather sensors across the U.S., plus several new local weather sensors that have been donated by National Grid. These new sensors are located at the Coventry Emergency Operations Center, Exeter Town Hall, Hopkinton Police Headquarters, and Roger Williams University. Three additional locations are on the way.

The donated sensors are part of National Grid's initiative to keep communities safer by providing real-time alerts and forecasts to first responders, local officials, and residents - while also providing National Grid with more accurate local weather information to help predict and prepare for severe storms.

ABC6 Chief Stormtracker Meteorologist Kevin Coskren says, "Area residents know that our weather can range from hot and humid in the summer to cold and snowy during the winter, and almost everything in between - including the occasional blizzard and tropial storm. That's why WLNE is teaming up with WeatherBug to bring live, local conditions from around the Providence area to our viewers and their families, so they can better prepare for the day ahead."

WeatherBug operates the world's largest real-time weather observing and lightning detection networks. WeatherBug sensors are placed right where people live and work - including thousands of K-12 schools, universities, parks, golf courses and public buildings.

WLNE WeatherBug Schools Program: Schools in the Providence area are invited to join the WeatherBug Schools Program to have their weather information and images shared on-air. Data from the school's weather station also supports STEM initiatives in the classroom. Combined with severe weather alerting, the weather sensors provide school faculty and staff with critical information to make important safety and transportation-related decisions. About the WeatherBug Broadcast Program: WLNE is the latest network affiliate to join the WeatherBug Broadcast Program, a growing group of stations throughout the U.S. that exclusively use data from the WeatherBug Weather Network within their respective markets.
