iPhone 5s is most popular handset in the UAE - TRA [Gulf News (United Arab Emirates)]


(Gulf News (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Abu Dhabi: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has come out with statistics for the second quarter of 2014 detailing the nation's most popular mobile phones, social networking platforms and application websites.



According to the report, from the period April 1 to June 30, 57 per cent of handsets registered on the UAE's networks were smartphones, an increase of 5 per cent in the second quarter alone.

In smartphones, the iPhone 5s was the most commonly used in the UAE with 3.5 per cent of total handsets registered on UAE networks, a figure that increased by 22 per cent during Q2. The iPhone 5 was the second most popular smartphone with 2.6 per cent market share, with Samsung S III (2.6 per cent) coming in third.


According to the report, 46 per cent of all handsets registered on UAE networks were manufactured by Nokia, although their share has been declining over time. This figure decreased by 4 per cent in Q2. This was followed by Samsung (22.5 per cent), Apple (10 per cent), and BlackBerry (6.8 per cent).

In terms of specific handset models, the iPhone 5s was the most popular mobile handset in the UAE in Q2, while the Nokia 101/1010 (3.1 per cent) was the second most popular.

Android was the most popular mobile operating systems in the UAE as of June 3, while the Symbian OS is declining over time. The market share of iOS is increasing while Blackberry OS share is decreasing.

Apple iTunes was by far the most commonly visited applications website.

In terms of social media, UAE smartphone and fixed internet users made a total of 35 billion visits to social networking websites during from April 1 to June 30. Visits to Facebook accounted for 86 per cent of total visits to social networking sites, followed by Twitter with 11 per cent.
