Charles River Associates (CRA) Expands Global Life Sciences Expertise

BOSTON --(Business Wire)--

Charles River Associates (NASDAQ: CRAI), a worldwide leader in providing management, economic, and financial consulting services, today announced that Ann Baker and Andrew Butcher have joined the firm as vice presidents in the Life Sciences Practice. They are the co-founders of life sciences consulting firm Atkinson Cowan, which has become part of CRA, and work with many leading pharmaceutical companies to advise on strategy and to support effective implementation of bringing new drugs to market. The arrivals of Ms. Baker and Mr. Butcher in London, in addition to the arrivals earlier in 2014 of Vice Presidents Dr. Michael Mueller and Dr. Urs Wiedemann in Munich, support a strategy of growing CRA's global Life Sciences Practice.

"It is a pleasure to welcome Ann Baker and Andrew Butcher to CRA," said CRA's President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Maleh. "They are highly knowledgeable in consulting to the R&D functions of life sciences companies, from strategy through implementation, and in stakeholder advocacy to support market access. In addition, Drs. Michael Mueller and Urs Wiedemann, who we welcomed earlier this year, have deep backgrounds in life sciences strategy consulting and transaction advisory services. As we seek to grow a global life sciences offering, their expertise is a great complement to our existing capabilities."

Ms. Baker has more than 25 years of experience working on strategy and business consulting engagements with companies in the pharmaceuticals, biotech, and medical devices sectors. She specializes in working with the R&D functions of life sciences companies. Before joining CRA, Ms. Baker co-founded Atkinson Cowan, a life sciences consulting firm in London. Previously, she was a partner with Accenture in the Health and Life Sciences Group and led the Pharmaceutical R&D Practice in the UK. She also worked for PA Consulting Group (News - Alert), and led the Pharmaceutical Strategy Group in its Melbourn, UK facility and the Technology Strategy Group in the US. Ms. Baker holds an MA (Hons) in Zoology from the University of Oxford and a BA (Hons) in History from The Open University.

Mr. Butcher specializes in communications and reputation management. He advises leadership and brand teams on maximizing the impact of stakeholder relations and communications to drive business strategy and internal change. He consults with life sciences firms on communications strategy, corporate reputation, and market access. Prior to joining CRA, Mr. Butcher co-founded Atkinson Cowan, a life sciences consulting firm in London. Before then, he led the Corporate and Market Access Practice of Axon Communications, and was managing director of a specialist corporate communications and reputation management consultancy, advising a range of private and public sector clients, including the National Health Service. Mr. Butcher holds a BA (Hons) in Engineering from the University of Oxford.

Dr. Michael Mueller has more than 15 years of experience providing strategic consulting for pharmaceuticals and medical devices companies, venture capital and private equity firms, health insurance groups, public authorities, and health care providers in Europe and the United States. Prior to joining CRA, he was a managing partner at CEPTON and a partner and head of the Global Life Sciences Practice for Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. He has also worked in clinical research and strategic marketing for global industry players in France and Germany. Dr. Mueller studied medicine and served as a physician in a university before joining the pharmaceuticals industry.

Dr. Urs Wiedemann specializes in portfolio management and strategy, the evaluation of new technologies, and accelerating marketing and sales. His work is primarily focused on the pharmaceuticals, biotech, and medical devices sector. Prior to joining CRA, he was a partner at CEPTON. Before that, he served as an independent advisor to health care clients in both Europe and abroad. He holds a MSc degree in biology and a PhD in biochemistry.

Said Group Vice President and Life Sciences Global Practice Leader Greg Bell, "The additions of Ann Baker, Andrew Butcher, Michael Mueller, and Urs Wiedemann support our vision of expanding CRA's Life Sciences Practice in several key areas, including strategy and litigation consulting in Europe. In London, the integrated consulting approach used by Ann and Andrew, combined with our policy consulting capability, provides an additional footprint from which we can offer a comprehensive offering to clients. In Germany, the team's scientific and clinical knowledge, an increasingly valuable capability for consulting in life sciences, builds on areas where we have been looking to expand our global expertise."
