New education body CEO named [Nation (Kenya)]

(Nation (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A new boss of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development has been appointed a few days after President Kenyatta nominated retired director Dr Lydia Nzomo as the chairperson of the Teachers Service Commission.

Dr Julius Ouma Jwan is the new the KICD chief executive officer and will replace Ms Mercy Karogo.

Ms Karogo was the acting director for the past four months after Dr Nzomo finished her tenure on June 30.

Making the announcement Friday, KICD council chairman Prof Peter Erastus Kinyanjui said the new director joins the institute at a time when rapid changes in the Kenyan education environment call for strategic leadership.

"Dr Jwan brings the experience and expertise to meet these challenges through a proven record of operational leadership, strategy development, customer service, team building, financial management and relationship management," he said.

He added that Mr Jwan, who is the former programmes and technical services director at the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), will bring a wealth of experience from the field of academia and governance.

Mr Jwan said he had a great task ahead of him as the new boss but he felt ready to work with the team to reform the state of basic education in Kenya.

"I will only be one amongst many. The demands from this institution and Kenyans at large are very heavy because the curriculum is the fulcrum of the future of education in our country," he said.

Before joining the NCIC in 2011, Mr Jwan was a lecturer at Moi University's School of Human Resource Development for thirteen years.

The appointment comes barely two months after the Kenya National Union of Teachers and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers started putting pressure on Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi to appoint a new KICD boss.
