Tigo clarifies intention to deploy LTE using 1700MHz/2100MHz bands, not 2600MHz [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tigo Paraguay, the country's largest mobile operator by subscribers, has confirmed that it intends to wait until it secures 1700MHz/2100MHz AWS spectrum in Conatel's imminent frequency auction before rolling out 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The cellco has come under fire from its rivals in recent weeks over its substantial spectrum holdings in the 2600MHz band; Tigo acquired a 50MHz block of 2600MHz frequencies in 2012 following its acquisition of local operator Cablevision. It remains unclear as to whether Conatel intends to order Tigo to relinquish the frequencies, which remain idle.
