Chip design and alternative therapy: LinkedIn analysis finds the most distinctly Portland jobs [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 22--Computer-chip design. Alternative medicine. Renewable energy. Graphic design.

These are some of the most distinctly Portland jobs, according to a new analysis from LinkedIn, the professional networking site.

LinkedIn analyzed the professional profiles of 175 million LinkedIn members in the United States and Europe, then identified the skills that most define each city. These aren't necessarily the biggest employers in each region -- but they're the ones more likely to be found in one place than in the nation as a whole.

The results aren't surprising -- green energy and alternative medicine confirm a lot of Portland stereotypes. And in a state where Intel has 17,500 employees, computer chips would obviously rank highly. LinkedIn says the state's top skill category is engineering.

Still, it's interesting to see what else defines Portland. (LinkedIn doesn't say so, but I presume the results are for the metro area -- not just the City of Portland.) Here's LinkedIn's full list: --Integrated Circuit (computer-chip) Design --Wellness and Alternative Therapy --Embedded System --Renewable and Sustainable Energy --Community Outreach and Development --Ecology & Environmental Science --Materials Engineering --User Interface Design --Graphical Design --Perl/Python/Ruby software developers I can imagine LinkedIn members are a bit of a self-selecting group. Some professionals might be less likely than others to list themselves on the site. And as noted above, the most distinctive professions aren't necessarily the largest.

For context, Oregon's three fastest-growing industries are construction, leisure and hospitality, and professional and business services, according to state data from earlier this year.

And for comparison's sake, here are the top categories in other western cities: Seattle: Cloud and distributed computing, game development, C/C++ software development, software engineering management, software and user testing, user interface design, Perl/Python/Ruby, web programming and algorithm design.

Boise: Chip design, real estate, environmental science, customer service, mortgage financing, wellness and alternative therapy, healthcare management, Microsoft Windows systems, construction, embedded systems. (Boise and Portland are more similar than I might have expected... though if you consider that Micron Technology is based there, it makes sense.) San Francisco Bay Area: Cloud and distributed computing, chip design, Perl/Python/Ruby developers, mobile development, algorithm design, embedded systems, user interface design, java development, game development, C/C++ development.

Missoula: Environmental science, GIS, nonprofits, photography, arts and crafts, writing and publishing, wellness and alternative therapy, real estate, construction, sports and fitness.

Anchorage: Mining, drilling, geology, workplace safety, environmental science, GIS, military, aviation, counterterrorism Check out cities across the U.S. in LinkedIn's full map below.
