New Honours for the Chair of Saint Mary's University's Board of Governors

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Oct. 21 -- Saint Mary's University issued the following news release: The Saint Mary's University community is pleased to congratulate John Fitzpatrick, Q.C., Chair of the University's Board of Governors, on receiving the 2014 Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service from the Dalhousie Law Alumni Association.

"I am very honoured to receive this award," says Fitzpatrick. "I am well aware that there are so many lawyers and classmates of mine who contribute so much to their community." Fitzpatrick is a senior partner at BOYNECLARKE LLP. He graduated from Saint Mary's in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts and received his Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1984. Throughout his 30-year legal career, he has applied his energy and commitment to volunteer service for a variety of community and professional organizations.

A loyal Santamarian, Fitzpatrick has served as a Board Member for the past 19 years. In addition to chairing the University's Board of Governors, he chairs the Executive Committee, the Advisory Committee to the President on Labour Relations, and the Presidential Search Committee. He is also a long standing member of the University's Governance Committee, and past chair of Saint Mary's Finance, Human Resources, and Government Corporate Affairs committees.

In addition to his current responsibilities at Saint Mary's, Fitzpatrick is a member of the World Wildlife Fund Canada, Atlantic Counsel.

For more than 20 years, Fitzpatrick has been actively involved in politics, serving as a regional chair for federal and provincial leadership campaigns and as past president and executive member of provincial and federal riding associations. He was also the co-chair of the 2000 federal election campaign in Nova Scotia.

Over the years, Fitzpatrick has been a tireless advocate for literacy causes, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for literacy programs in Nova Scotia as the past chair and co-chair of several Peter Gzowski Golf Tournaments for Literacy. As well, he served for ten years on the Board of Directors and the Executive of ABC Canada Literacy Foundation (now ABC Life Literacy) in Toronto ---a prominent national charity that supports the development of a fully literate Canadian population.

Fitzpatrick has also found time to raise funds for many deserving charitable organizations, including The Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia, Apple Tree Landing Children's Centre, Autism Nova Scotia, Metro United Way, and the Saint Mary's University Capital Campaign. As well as being a Board member for many years for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kings County, he was also a committed fundraiser for the organization.

In recognition of his many contributions, Fitzpatrick received the Canada 125 Medal in 1992, the Peter Gzowski Award in 1995, and the Canadian Bar Association Community Service Award in 2005. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2008 and was recently awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
