Small business forum Tuesday on protecting against cyber theft [FARS News Agency]

(FARS News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Assemblyman Steve Otis, D-Rye, and the Women's Enterprise Development Center Inc. are hosting a Small Business and Economic Development Forum on how local businesses and retailers can better protect customer data from potential hacking and theft. The event runs from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mamaroneck Town Center, 740 West Boston Post Road.

Incidences of cyber theft from large, high-profile retailers like Target and Home Depot have received a lot of attention, but more than 70 percent of all data breaches impact small retailers, restaurants and businesses, event organizers said. They are perhaps least equipped to protect themselves against a cyber attack, they said.

The panel will include industry, law enforcement and security experts, including representatives of the state attorney general's office, Better Business Bureau and MasterCard.

While some owners might worry that they lack the financial means to develop an effective data protection plan, our panelists are here to help with strategies and resources that are tailored made for small business operations, Otis said in a statement.
