The company which is going through a proposed split into two companies, one focused on security and the other on information management, is presently the world's second-leading maker of purpose-built backup appliances in terms of revenue. Symantec has two backup appliance lines, both based on commodity hardware. One line is built on the firm's NetBackup data protection software for medium and business customers, while the other on the SME- and midrange-focused Backup Exec software.
