United Kingdom : SKY enters talks with BRITISH carriers to use their networks [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Before it launches its own mobile phone service, Sky has entered talks with several main wireless carriers in the UK.

Sky is in talks with Vodafone, EE, and O2 to use their networks to provide a "virtual" cellular service to its customers.

This is called a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), similar to that which companies like Tesco and GiffGaff already offer.

A Sky-branded mobile phone network would likely have a major impact on the mobile phone landscape in Britain, and along with the imminent launch of the BT consumer mobile offering (thanks to a collaboration with EE), it will raise pressure on the incumbents, especially Vodafone and O2.

Such a move would allow Sky to match the likes of Virgin Media and TalkTalk in providing their customers with so-called "quad-play" packages - TV, broadband, landline, and mobile for one monthly cost.
