Cameroon : ART to raise number of telephone digits in CAMEROON [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Telecoms regulator, l'Agence de Regulation des Telecommunications (ART), has decided to raise the number of telephone digits in Cameroon from eight to nine come 21st November 2014.

ART said the countrywide change will have an imapact on all telephony operators (landline and mobile) in the country, including CAMTEL, Orange, MTN and Viettel.

State-controlled CAMTEL, which is Cameroon's landline monopoly operator, has been offered the fourth cellphone licence and will enter the market in 2015 through its mobile arm CMT.

The telecommunications industry of Cameroon has been going through a major restructuring in the last two years, and many observers say this change could be part of the reforms being implemented by the government of Paul Biya to reorganize and unlock the sector's space.

ART said the move to raise the digits seeks to position and 'secure' the country as the number of telephone subscribers keeps increasing considerably since 1999.
