Comcast urges customers to update modems [Herald & Review, Decatur, Ill.]

(Herald & Review (Decatur, IL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 20--DECATUR -- Access to the Internet has become an afterthought in most residences.

That is, until those users find themselves unable to connect to the Internet on any of their devices.

Letters have been sent out to users of Comcast over the past month, notifying them of the need to update their modem and other devices in order to get the full benefits of the changes. Specifically, Comcast has recently increased the speeds of some of their Internet tiers.

While the benefit of faster in-home WiFi speeds and additional bandwidth is a positive, the updates can take a toll on older modems and devices.

A way to tell there is a problem is notably slower Internet connections and a difficulty for computers and other devices to connect to WiFi. The problem is especially noticeable in households with multiple devices connected to the Internet. The problem has been found to generally affect modems that are several years old.

The company has provided several replacement options to customers, which include the purchase of a new cable modem. The modems must be certified to work on the Comcast network, with a list being available at http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net. In addition, Comcast provides an opportunity to rent a cable modem by phone, with additional fees in ordering by telephone and in case of professional installation.

Cable modem rentals have been one of the highest money makers for the organization, with $275 million to $300 million raised each quarter from the $8 a month rental fees.

Unused modems are asked to be recycled with the local municipality.
