Jet cockpit displays are wiped out by mobiles ; 1,300 Boeings must swap monitors [Edition 2] [Mirror (UK)]

(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) AIRLINES have been ordered to change cockpit displays in around 1,300 Boeing jets - because mobile phones and computer signals could make the screens go blank.

Regulators who discovered the potentially disastrous problem said some of the screens in the planes were "wi-fi allergic". It is estimated that changing the equipment will cost millions.

The edict relates to Boeing 737s and 777s, and was issued by the Federal Aviation Administration in the US which discov-ered the fault. The makers of the displays, American technology giant Honeywell, stressed that the issue has not been experienced in- flight.

A spokesman said: "The only known occurrence was during a developmental test conducted on the ground.

"We worked with Boeing and addressed any concerns in 2012 with new display hardware." Boeing, which is based in Chicago, had issued an alert two years ago after an airline and wi-fi provider noticed interference caused by the installation of an in-flight internet system.
