USU Extension Sponsors Utah Building Farmers Program

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LOGAN, Utah, Sept. 30 -- Utah State University issued the following news release: Utah State University Extension sponsors the Utah Building Farmers Direct Market Course Oct. 21, 22 and Nov. 6 at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center, 111 East 100 North, Moab.

The Utah Building Farmers Program is designed to help farmers by focusing on building and reinforcing capacity through interaction with Extension, producer peers and community resources. The program also aims to build a strong community network among producers involved in direct marketing and their suppliers and customers.

According to Kynda Curtis, USU Extension agricultural marketing specialist, the class series is designed for those looking to develop business and marketing plans for sales at direct market outlets such as farmers markets, community supported agriculture (CSAs), farm stands and restaurants; experienced farmers and ranchers looking to retool, refine and enhance their current business; and next generation farmers and ranchers returning to the family farm and seeking new or alternative enterprises to enhance existing production.

"The program thrives on participation from producers with all levels of experience," said Curtis. "Farmers and ranchers will develop new connections in their local areas for inputs, specialized production, extending the growing season, marketing outlets and credit and loan programs." As part of the program, participants complete a business plan that includes feedback from peers and local experts. Participants also have the opportunity for mentorships with experienced farmers and other chances to gain experience with production, financial and business planning consultants.

Workshop topics include business planning and resources, financial records and budgeting, direct and target marketing strategies, capital resources and federal grant and loan programs, social media and web-based marketing and food safety plans.

Registration fee is $60 and includes all meals, snacks and program materials. Meals allow time for participants to network. Registration is available at https://utahbuildingfarmers-moab.eventbrite.com. For further information, contact Curtis at [email protected] 435-797-0444.
