Manitoba's Life Science Community Encourages Youth to Consider Careers in Biotechnology

WINNIPEG, Manitoba --(Business Wire)--

The Life Science Association of Manitoba (LSAM), in partnership with BIOTECanada, is celebrating the 11th National Biotechnology Week from Sept. 26 - Oct. 3, 2014. This year, the organizations have planned events encouraging students, businesses, researchers, community leaders and the public to learn about local biotechnological achievements which have made an impact on Manitoba's community, economy and future.

"We're excited to help expose the incredibly inventive work that's spearheaded in our province," says LSAM President Tracey Maconachie. "Not everyone knows how 3D printing is being used to develop artificial hips and knees, how companies are using flax to replace fibreglass, and that we have one of the most advanced bioprocessing and product development facilities in the world. We want to continue bringing Manitoba's life science industry to the forefront, and focus on inspiring the next generation of scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs."

Business leaders are invited for breakfast in the Golden Boy Room at the Manitoba Legislative Building on September 30, 2014 at 7:30 a.m. to share their perspectives on "Your Future in BioTech - Why work in life sciences?". The event will feature several guest speakers discussing the importance, expectations, and future careers of the biotechnology industry in Manitoba.

"Educators recognize the potential our students have to make huge gains when it comes to science and technology," says Isabel Bright, Chair of Life Sciences at Red River College "We're excited to see organizations like LSAM engaging students and encouraging them to discover what a future in life sciences is all about."
