Get SMART: MTS Turkmenistan relaunches 3G network, refreshes footprint [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MTS Turkmenistan will relaunch its 3G network under the 'SMART' banner on 1 October, Central Asia's Trend news agency reports. From that date, the cellco will offer coverage of Ashgabat, Turkmenbashi and other unnamed regional centres. The company's 3G network was effectively shut down in December 2010 – one month after its launch – when the government abruptly suspended the company's commercial activities over a licensing dispute. Going forward, MTS intends to invest more than USD40 million in the development of the 3G network by the end of 2015.*According to TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database, MTS Turkmenistan relaunched its 2G network on 30 August 2012, after agreeing new terms with the Turkmen authorities in March that year. The cellco was granted a new 3G licence which was valid for three years, and went on to sign a 3G deployment contract with Nokia Solutions & Networks (NSN) in August 2013.
