BRIEF: Tart cherry harvest hits 297.7 million pounds [The Record-Eagle, Traverse City, Mich.]

(Record-Eagle, The (Traverse City, MI) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 26--TRAVERSE CITY -- The nation's red tart cherry harvest totaled 297.7 million pounds, said the Cherry Industry Administrative Board.

The board met in Pasco, Wa., this month to review the crop and set the marketing order for the year.

It recommended to the Secretary of Agriculture that 320 million pounds of tart cherries be made available for the market. That figure includes inventory carried into the year by product handlers and marketers. The board recommended that inventory reserves include 59 million pounds of tart cherries for protection against possible future crop failures or shortfalls.

The board said the year's healthy crop -- the fourth largest crop produced since 1997, the start of the marketing order -- will help the market continue its rebound from the crop failure in 2012.
