(Daily Trust (Nigeria) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Over 1,020 mobile telephone handset brands have been approved as fit to be sold in the country by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

NCC said that the government has issued approval to 76 mobile device manufacturers to bring the approved handset brands to Nigeria this month.

The list of brands of handset approved by the telecoms regulator yesterday include Nokia, Samsung, Huawei, Sonny Ericson, Blackberry, Apple, Motorola, ZTE, Ericsson, Infinix, LG, Gionee, Tecno, HTC, GTide and Haier Thermocool, among others The commission said the objective of equipment type approval for mobile handsets is to ensure that communications equipment intended for the Nigerian market complied with local and international standards.

It also said type approval standards were also set to ensure maximum affordability for consumers based on requirements by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR).

Complaints about the purchase of fake and substandard devices by unsuspecting buyers were on the rise across the country.

Microsoft recently expressed dissatisfaction over the unbridled influx of fake and substandard mobile telephones into Nigeria.

A Microsoft official David Efanga who spoke during the official opening of Nokia Products and Service Centre in Port Harcourt said: "We are calling on the necessary Nigeria agency that is responsible for standardisation of imported products to rise up to their responsibilities by monitoring what is being brought into the country to ensure that fake or substandard products are stopped from entering."
