Take up your arms and take on the dreaded Darkness ; Games reviews What's hot in the games world, [Lincolnshire Echo (England)]

(Lincolnshire Echo (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Destiny. PS4 (reviewed), PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360. Publisher: Activision. Rating: 10/10 In the present day, a vast sphere known as the Traveller is discovered floating around Mars. It comes to Earth and its arrival sparks a new golden age of interstellar travel and prosperity. Years later, the solar system has been colonised and mankind is ready to go further afield, but then the Traveller's enemy, the Darkness, turns up with lots of nasty aliens.

They destroy everything that has been made, leaving Earth in ruins except for the last human city - protected by the damaged Traveller.

You play a soldier, a Guardian, who's been resurrected by the sphere for some mysterious purpose. You travel to the Tower, where you meet your fellow Guardians and get kitted out, ready for some serious first person shooter business.

Destiny is the new game from Bungie, the company that created the hugely successful Halo series, so expectations have been extremely high - and Destiny doesn't disappoint. The graphics are excellent and the action is flawlessly smooth. You can quickly gather a wealth of deadly/handy new equipment, upgrade your spaceship to help you get around the solar system, interact with other players - who tend to be friendly rather than rude or hostile - and follow the intriguing missions from one beautiful location to the next.

Metro 2033 Redux. PC (reviewed), PS4, Xbox One. Publisher: Deep Silver. Rating: 9/10 In a not entirely implausible scenario, given recent political events, Russia has been devastated by a nuclear strike. The survivors have taken refuge in Moscow's extensive underground railway system and have split into rival factions while above ground animals have become mutated monsters. Your character is Artyom, a young man who's living in part of the metro and discovers that his home is under threat from mysterious beings known as the Dark Ones. He sets out to stop them from finishing off what the war started.

Metro 2033, originally a 2005 Russian novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, was released as a video game in 2010 but suffered due to the inadequacies of the consoles that were around at the time. However, in glorious high definition, those devastated vistas really pop and the vile mutants and desperate survivors are a real treat for the eye.

The story is gripping and combat is generally quick and messy. This is exactly how remakes should be done.
