Business Video Wins Berkshire Hair Salon an Entrepreneur's Circle Nomination

(Cision Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A Newbury based hair salon has enjoyed unprecedented success thanks to an innovative business video harnessing the power of social media. In addition to attracting an influx of new clients and high calibre stylist applicants, Bravo Hairdressing’s recruitment video has also been nominated for Entrepreneur's Circle’s ‘Best Business Video’ award.

The video came to light after Bravo Hairdressing underwent 12 months of intensive enhancements which covered everything from customer service and marketing to staff training and procedures. While the final outcome was a huge success, the salon has faced the upheaval of replacing its entire styling and apprenticeship team over a period of 18 months. Despite local press advertising, trade press online advertising, online advertisements and recruitment agencies, Bravo Hairdressing was unable to find suitable applicants to fill the vacancies. Using innovation and creativity, salon co-owner Phil Jackson came up with the idea of an integrated video recruitment plan designed to attract cream of the crop applicants.

Phil Jackson said, “The outcome of our video has gone above and beyond what I would ever have expected. I’ve received an influx of high calibre applicants that have boosted the reputation of the salon and attracted a huge number of new clients.” Held at the prominent ICC Birmingham, the National Entrepreneur Awards 2014 recognises some of the UK’s most promising new businesses. The ‘Best Business Video’ award is bestowed to an entrepreneur who has used video technology to generate impressive and measurable results.

The Entrepreneur’s Convention website explains, “We don’t want wishy -washy corporate crap that can’t be linked to a single sale. Neither is this about number of views on YouTube. Rather the judges are looking for videos that can be backed up with sales figures. Videos that have been an integral part of the sales process. Creativity, originality, production, and most importantly, those numbers, will all be taken into account.” Bravo Hairdressing’s entry fits the organisation’s prerequisites to the core. Since its release, the video has clocked up over 500 views and won the business 40 new candidates, 12 interviews and two brilliant new employees.

The plan of attack involved a unique three-pronged approach. Using video and Facebook promotion, the ‘find me a stylist’ landing page offered females free haircuts in return for delivering the salon a suitable stylist. The second ‘staff push’ phase offered current employees £500 in return for delivering a stylist who racked up over three months on the payroll. The third ‘we need to talk’ phase took a broader approach and targeted local 18-45 year olds with an interest in hairdressing, hair colour, hair styling, hair salons, stylists, hair perming or hair straightening.

During the execution process, Jackson drew on the help of every available resource.  Customers were offered a free cut and blow-dry in exchange for their time as extras while a regular client set-up, filmed and edited the video for just £250. The results of the published video were overwhelming. For less than £500, Jackson has created a valuable recruitment resource, attracted new clients and pushed the boundaries of the conventional staff hire process.

Mr Jackson said, “The whole experience has been a huge learning curve, as an individual and as a business manager. I think I deserve to win this award because I utilised every resource available to me, and created the very successful innovative video and implemented a marketing plan for under £500 – less than half of what a recruitment agency would charge for just one successful applicant.  When I look back I see my comfort zone has been left a sad, withered, grey thing somewhere beyond the horizon.” In light of the salon’s huge success, Bravo Hairdressing has set its sights on the goal of opening four additional salons over the next six years.
