United States : INTEL boosts smartphone strategy [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) We've known for a number of years that Intel's focus on the secondary patent market is to strengthen its patent portfolio in the mobile space as the chipmaker tries to get a foothold in the smartphone industry.

Intel lost out to the Rockstar group in the bidding for the Nortel portfolio, in 2011. It followed that setback, by acquiring a large portfolio from InterDigital for $375 million in 2012.

The company has recently announced that it has dded a further 1,400 patents from Powerwave.

The most recent acquisition, made from an associate of the Gores Group which aquired the patents from Powerwave in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, involves telecommunications infrastructure technology.

The true test for the chip maker's smartphone strategy would come at the year-end when it launches a new chip with integrated 3G and then an LTE version next year.

We should be able to tell whether Intel's entry in the secondary patent market has been worthwhile, by 2015.
