survey: no - alex: yes [Wales on Sunday (Wales)]

(Wales on Sunday (Wales) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FIRST Minister Alex Salmond said the pro-independence side had the momentum last night - despite a new poll which puts the No camp narrowly in the lead.

His comments came as phone companies warned Scottish independence could lead to increased costs.

In an open letter, telecommunications chiefs said they may need to modify networks and consider whether to modify the services offered in an independent Scotland.

The letter is signed by the chief executives of BT Group, TalkTalk Group, Telefonica UK (O2), Vodafone UK, EE and Three UK.

Deutsche Bank also warned that the financial and economic arguments against Scottish independence are "overwhelming", and compared a Yes vote to the mistakes which led to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Meanwhile, the heads of Marks and Spencer, B&Q and Timpson said customers would pay more if the people of Scotland deliver a Yes vote on Thursday.

In a boost for the No camp, a new poll gave them a narrow lead.

When undecided voters are factored out, 54% plan to vote No while 46% intend to say Yes, according to a Survation poll commissioned by Better Together and carried out between September 10 and 12.

Blair McDougall, campaign director of Better Together, said: "This poll suggests that No are in the lead but that the race is far from over. No-one can afford a protest vote." Mr Salmond said: "What matters is what's happening in the streets and communities around Scotland, the Yes side has the momentum and that's going to carry us through and that's because we've got a positive message, we want to build a more prosperous economy and a fairer society, and there's no scare story that the No campaign can mobilise which competes with that positive vision for the future of Scotland."
