Numbers add up as trainee accountants join company [Derby Evening Telegraph (England)]

(Derby Evening Telegraph (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A BAKER'S dozen of accountancy trainees have started learning how to look after clients' dough at a Castle Donington firm.

PKF Cooper Parry is hoping to strike it lucky with a fresh batch of 13 students it has taken on this month.

Six of the trainees will be studying towards the Association of Accounting Technicians' qualification. Laurel Fiddes, Fern Farnsworth, Poppy Marsh, Helen Christie, Zarfishan Khan and Chris Jones will be taking the internationally recognised route into accountancy.

Christian Peat, senior audit manager at PKF Cooper Parry, said: "We are focusing our recruitment strategy on college-leavers.

"This AAT qualification followed by the opportunity to complete the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales' chartered accountancy qualification has proved very successful for us and our team members over a number of years. "With employers looking more towards college-leavers to join the profession at an earlier stage coupled with the increase in university fees, the AAT route offers a very exciting option for those looking at a career in accountancy." The company is also welcoming back two graduates, Katie Milner and Laura Brooks, who spent their placement year at the firm, and new graduate Ollie Macildowie. Abbey Walker and Bethan Lloyd join on placements in the audit department and Cooper Parry's IT department has taken on apprentices Adam Wakefield and Andrew Burbridge.

Mrs Peat said: "Studying for the AAT qualification not only provides you with commercial insight and set you on the path of an exciting career, it also allows you to earn money whilst doing it." Chief executive officer Ade Cheatham said: "Opting for AAT rather than the university route gives you an internationally recognised qualification, but also allows you to gain invaluable work skills while you train, getting to know how a business runs, and giving you the opportunity to prove yourself before you qualify."
