CITGO Raises $13.6 Million to Help Fight Muscle Disease

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CHICAGO, IL (PRWEB) September 08, 2014 CITGO Petroleum Corporation and its employees and branded Marketers raised more than $13.6 million over the past year to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease. Vital funds provided by CITGO have long supported MDA's world renowned research efforts, life-changing health care services and community support programs, including MDA summer camp and advocacy efforts that involve local communities.

"We've never wavered in our commitment to MDA and the families it serves," said Rafael Gomez, vice president of government and public affairs for CITGO. "Working to improve the health and well-being of people in our communities is one of our core social responsibility principles, one that is shared equally by our employees, Marketers and Retailers. Together, we continue to support MDA because we know that our combined efforts will one day lead to cure." For almost three decades, CITGO and its nearly 6,000 locally owned retail locations have raised more than $170 million for MDA through a wide variety of fundraising events, including golf tournaments, mobile sales and socials. These funds have made a significant impact in moving toward a world free of the harmful effects of muscle disease.

"Since 1986, CITGO and its employees and Marketers have shown an incredible level of commitment to helping advance MDA's mission to save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease," MDA President and CEO Steven M. Derks said. "The generosity of CITGO has long helped MDA invest in vital research to find treatments and cures and fund critical support and services for our families across the nation. We're deeply thankful for the company's loyal support." CITGO is MDA's largest corporate partner and was recently highlighted on the national broadcast of the MDA Show of Strength Telethon on Aug. 31 on ABC television stations across the country. The 49th annual broadcast raised $56.9 million to benefit children and adults served by MDA. Click here to see one of the 2014 telethon CITGO highlights.
