LTE Multicast can bring 400 million dollars a year to mid-range operators, as demonstrated by Expway's "More Bucks With Less Bits" white paper

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

Mobile Broadcast specialist Expway Corp. recently published the results of its study revealing where LTE (News - Alert) Multicast's value is for operators, compared to unicast-only delivery. Expway's white paper, More Bucks With Less Bits, summarizes these findings through 14 different LTE Multicast business models.

In the analysis, Expway demonstrates that LTE Multicast can be a major upgrade for operators, revenue-wise: A carrier the size of 25 million subscribers can bring in $150 million of new revenue annually, while saving $250 million in transmission costs, by implementing the business cases identified in the white paper.

"With this study, we demonstrated that LTE Broadcast is a versatile technology that can beused already, today, in a wide variety of cases," said Ulla Saari, Vice President of Business Development Strategic Accounts at Expway.

Expway's analysis was built by compiling the results of 16 research papers aggregated in one coherent document. Expway has done a "sanity check" of the analysis and its assumptions with a few selected Tier 1 carriers, which have supported Expway's findings.

Each business case has been studied along 5 axes: (1) whether eMBMS would bring any cost reduction when compared to the current situation, (2) the extra revenues the carrier could generate with eMBMS, (3) the capability to attract new subscribers, (4) the improvement of quality service from the end-user perspective, and (5) the ease of implementation (from both a technical and a business point of view).

The Expway white paper also reveals that LTE Multicast allows an operator to increase its margin by more than $15 per subscriber, per year. This amount comes as a mix of new revenue, new customers and cost savings.

"LTE Broadcast is the technology that will bridge the gap between broadcast and telecom. We will see more and more voluminous and time-sensitive content to transmit over the telecom networks, to consumers' TVs, smartphones, tablets and even TVs," concluded Saari.

Expway will be present at CTIA'14 in Las Vegas from September 9 to 11, 2014. Its white paper can be downloaded here.
