ArmenTel cuts fixed telephony charges [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Armenian incumbent PTO ArmenTel, trading as Beeline, has announced a price cut to its fixed line telephony services effective 1 September. Following a 29 July decision from the industry watchdog, the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), the telco now has the green light to cut the cost of all local outgoing calls within Armenia and the region of Nagorno-Karabakh to AMD5 (USD0.00732) per minute, once a subscriber has used up their package of 360 minutes of 'free' voice calls. Currently, the Russian-backed telco charges residential users AMD20 per minute (peak) and business customers AMD24/minute once the limit has been reached. Off-peak rates are AMD14 per minute for consumers and AMD16.8 for businesses. The new rates will be applied automatically to all ArmenTel fixed telephony customers across the country. Further, the PSRC has also approved a separate decision (1 July 2014) confirming that effective 1 January 2015, free minutes will also apply to long-distance calls as well.
