ANAN Moves to Global Standards, Plans More Foreign Language Syllabus

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) THE President of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Alhaji Sakirudeen Labode, said the association had moved from national to the global scene and to commence exportation of Accounting knowledge beyond Africa.

Labode, disclosed this in his remarks at the Presidential Dinner organised in his honour by the South West Zone of ANAN in Lagos.

"We went global and there is a prize to pay for it and this is the issue of being updated technically. In taking ANAN to the global level, it is now a challenge of sustaining its relevance," he said.

ANAN chief said that before the end of the year, the association would become a full-fledged member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

He noted that the coming of the association was "a well-thought out" plan by those who had something new to offer, which they actually did.

According to him, the association would soon commence exportation of accounting knowledge to other places of the world beyond Africa, where it is presently.

Labode said that Chinese and other languages would soon be added to the syllabus of the Nigerian College of Accountancy (NCA), Jos, the training arm of the association, beside French presently being offered in the college.

He pointed out that the association gave priority to technical capacity building of its members because the searchlight was on the public sector for transparency and accountability.

"You need better knowledge and technical capacity to do what is right, issue of ethics is no longer a joke," Labode said, urging members to be upright and show reciprocal gratitude to their employers.

"The nation has supported us and we must show gratitude for that support. The government and the citizens of Nigeria stood by us," he added.

However, the Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, urged accountants to be acquainted with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), adding that it was expected of ANAN members to collaborate on adequate record-keeping of internally generated revenue.

Ajimobi, who was represented by the Director of Finance and Accounts in the Accountants-General's Office, Alhaji Olaojo Adeniyi, said the dinner held in honour of an illustrious Yoruba son (Labode) was a vivid impression that "there is reward for hardwork".

"Oyo State government has given a pride of place to professional accountants in its service and had approved the establishment of the position of the Director of Finance and Accounts in all its ministries, agencies and parastatals to he headed by an accountant," the governor said.

The Coordinating Chairman of the South West Zone of ANAN, Mrs. Elemanya Ebilah, said, "Labode is one of our own and our state officials and our friends in the private sectors have gathered to honour our No 1 Man".

She said that the zonal officers were conscious that the Labode's presidency would soon come to an end at the next Annual General Meeting, adding that this was why the leadership of the South West Zone of ANAN organised this Presidential Dinner to honour him.

Also, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Samuel Nzekwe, who is also a former president of the association, urged members of the association to collaborate and move the Accountancy profession forward.

He urged members to rub minds on issues during the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD), meetings and the association's conference.
