IMTS 2014: Preparing Your Visit [Manufacturing Engineering]

(Manufacturing Engineering Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Don't forget to pack your comfy show shoes. IMTS 2014-which is produced every two years by the Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT; McLean, VA)-plans to fill 1.2 million square feet of Chicago's McCormick Place with 1900 exhibitors and more than 100,000 visitors from over 112 countries. In all, more than 15,000 new machine tools, controls, computers, software, components, systems and processes will be on display.

If you've been to IMTS before, you already know to plan your trip carefully, so you can see what you want before moving from one sprawling hall to the next.

There's a lot more to see at this year's show, too, as manufacturing technology companies offer more advanced solutions to automate upstream and downstream and more machine builders combine processes in one machine or link machines with automation and software solutions, such as MT Connect, to enhance productivity and efficiency.

Additive manufacturing technologies, known popularly as 3D printing, also show they've moved into the mainstream at this year's show, with practical applications and fascinating new machines that combine additive and substractive technologies, for the production of metal parts.

As part of its Smartforce Student Summit, there will also be a continued focus on workforce development or preparing the next generation for a career in advanced manufacturing.

IMTS has a longstanding tradition of gathering middle school, high school and college students, educators, administrators and parent chaperones to experience advanced manufacturing technologies up close and meet industry professionals.

At the Smartforce Student Summit, students will have the opportunity to talk to "MTAmbassadors," young manufacturing professionals in their 20s, who are already enjoying a successful career and lifestyle because they've chosen a career in manufacturing.
