BRIEF: Clearview Elementary students rewarded for reading: They duct-taped two people to a wall [York Daily Record, Pa. :: ]

(York Daily Record (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 30--For some, getting children to read can be a task. It can seem more like work than fun.

A little incentive might help. And that's exactly what happened this summer in the Red Lion Area School District, with the help from the library.

To motivate students to read during the summer, Clearview Elementary reading specialists and the Collinsville Community Library teamed up for a challenge: If 150 children participated in the summer reading program, they could duct-tape Principal Sheila Hughes to a wall.

If they also accumulated 30,000 minutes of reading, they could duct-tape library branch manager Ellen Helfrick to a wall as well.

In the end, 147 students recorded about 137,000 minutes of reading time, so each student at the school contributed a strip of duct tape to hold Hughes and Helfrick to a gym wall Friday on their way to lunch.

Those who read at least 800 minutes also get to attend an ice cream party.
