No Time for Harsin to Reflect on First Game at BSU [The Times-News, Twin Falls, Idaho :: ]

(Times-News (Twin Falls, ID) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 29--ATLANTA -- His Boise State cap firm to his eyebrows, Bryan Harsin couldn't hide the bags under his eyes minutes after the Broncos fell to No. 18 Ole Miss 35-13 in the Georgia Dome in its season opener.

It's the first year head coach's dream job, he a former player, assistant and Boise native.

On Thursday night, there was imagination in the first half, but visions of following the path of his predecessor had vanished by the fourth quarter.

Now there's definitely no time for dreams. Maybe there never was for Harsin.

Being the head coach at Boise State, the bar so high and the target on the program so big, is like a 24-7/365 a-day mining operation, with most of the big stuff already quarried, the dig for greater success always getting deeper and more arduous, seemingly a race against the inevitable.

There's no time to reflect on what's been built, or acknowledge just how big the shoes Harsin has to fill.

Already it appears to be work, work, work. Coal-mine, coal-mine, coal-mine.

"Whether we had won or lost the game, we need to go back to work. It's never good enough," Harsin said.

This won't be the Cinderella season Chris Petersen had when Boise State blew out Oregon State in the opener en route to an undefeated season and Fiesta Bowl win.

The Harsin honeymoon, where he stole away Petersen recruits, landed the best class in school history, launched a brilliant Twitter marketing campaign and "invaded" towns and schools across the state on foot, is over.

"I'm disappointed because we didn't win, but we aren't going to make excuses for not winning the ball game," Harsin said. "That's not what we do. We'll find ways to get better, I'm proud of our team." The Broncos offensive playcalling was as hoped: unpredictable, clever and bold. There were shifts and motions, misdirection, receivers throwing to receivers, and odd formations.

But there were things Harsin could not control. These are not his players, a reliable alibi against any future accusers in the next few years, and they were not as good as the players from the rising but still a middle-upper SEC team.

Oh well. It's already on to Colorado State.

"We have to do it, we have to go out there and do it, bottom line," Harsin said.
