BRIEF: United Way kicks off annual campaign [American News, Aberdeen, S.D. :: ]

(Aberdeen American News (SD) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 28--United Way of Northeastern South Dakota is aiming to raise $675,000 to support 17 nonprofit agencies.

Those agencies run 37 local and area programs. Executive Director Aaron Schultz said the campaign officially kicked off with a breakfast this morning.

On average, United Way funding comprises 25 percent of the budget for the agencies supported, according to Schultz, who is new to his position as executive director, but sat on the United Way of Northeastern South Dakota board of directors for seven years.

Most of the campaigning will take place in September and October. Businesses are contacted and employees are asked to make contributions. Donations can be made in many ways, including payroll deductions, Schultz said. Contributions can be as little as $1 or $2 per paycheck.

"I've always felt personally that United Way is a way individuals can contribute to programs that provide value," said Bob Compton, the chair of the local campaign. "One thing near and dear to me is programs providing resources for people to develop skills to be self-sufficient." ___ (c)2014 the American News (Aberdeen, S.D.)
