Who says glamazons are all about being pretty? Scratch the makeup, and you're sure to find a lot of greys in them too. For instance, when you say Tom Hanks, movies like Forrest Gump, You've Got Mail or his recent hit Captain Philips come to mind. However, there is also an ingenious side to him. Known for his love of and obsession with typewriters, he has come up with a typewriter app that has been trending on a popular app store. This app lets you type on your smartphones just like a typewriter - sound and all! Hanks, however, is not the first celebrity who has ventured into a field different from his own. Here's looking at celebrities who shocked the world with a different side of them.

Prince I Wanna Be Your Lover singer, Prince, has not only produced award-winning music but has also been in the news for his spat with ex-lover Madonna. In a bid to look cool while playing the keyboard instead of stooping over to play the keys, Prince invented the Keytar - a portable keyboard guitar. In tune with his hit album Purple Rain, he dubbed this invention as Purpleaxxe.


Hedy Lamarr Who knew one of the most beautiful actresses by day, was an inventor by night? Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr proved that she was not just an international beauty queen with a pretty face. She was, in fact, the pioneer in wireless communication. Lamarr, along with co-inventor George Anthiel developed a 'Secret Communications System' during World War II. Her invention is the backbone that has made wireless communication like fax, cellular phones, etc., possible.

Marlon Brando Who knew The Godfather would also be the godfather of the invention for tensioning drumheads? In 2002, this legend received a patent for a "drumhead tensioning device and method".

Julie Newmar Julie Newmar, who made Catwoman a force to reckon with in the 1960s Batman series, also has an invention to her name - the pantyhose! The gorgeous actress probably invented this for her own use, that is, the Catwoman's comfort and got the invention patented under the quirky name of "pantyhose with shaping band for cheeky derriere relief".

Jamie Lee Curtis The quirky mom from Freaky Friday has had a host of roles to her credit. But she won over the world when her motherly instincts translated into an invention and earned her a patent. Jamie Lee Curtis came up with a moisture proof pocket for diapers, containing wet wipes. Although she never launched the product in the market due to the lack of disposable diapers, she nevertheless showed some impressive skills.
