Britain on track to spend more than £100bn online this year

(City A.M. (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A SURGE in the number of Britons booking their next holiday abroad helped online retail sales bounce back in July after a disappointing first half of the year.

Consumers spent an estimated £8.1bn online in July, a 14 per cent jump on the same month last year, according to figures published yesterday by e-tail industry body IMRG and advisory firm Capgemini.

This compares with just nine per cent growth in June, which marked the slowest growth since July 2013, as the retail sector suffered from a hangover following the World Cup.

The travel sector rose by 13 per cent year-on-year - its strongest July performance in three years - while electricals leapt by 19 per cent, up from seven per cent in June.

IMRG's Tina Spooner said increased spending on big ticket items showed "we are on track to see in excess of £100bn spent online for the first time this year".
