(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mexico's largest cellco by subscribers, Telcel, has announced that it has begun providing Long Term Evolution (LTE)-based services in the city of Monclova. In extending coverage to this new location, the mobile network operator confirmed that its 4G network is now available in a total of 39 cities, those being: Acapulco, Aguascalientes, Apizaco, Cancun, Ciudad Juarez, Ciudad Victoria, Celaya, Chihuahua, Culiacan, Cuernavaca, Durango, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Irapuato, Los Cabos, Leon, Mazatlan, Merida, Mexicali, Mexico City, Monclova, Monterrey, Morelia, Nogales, Pachuca, Puebla, Puerto Vallarta, Queretaro, Reynosa, Saltillo, San Luis Potosi, Tampico, Tijuana, Toluca, Torreon, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Veracruz, Villahermosa and Zacatecas.

As noted in TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database, Telcel was actually the second of the nation's wireless operators to inaugurate its 4G network, behind rival Movistar Mexico, which launched in October 2012. With the market leader having introduced its own LTE tariffs the following month, with initial coverage of nine cities, by the end of 2013 it claimed a total of 1.029 million 4G subscribers, equivalent to 1.4% of its total user base at that date.
